This content creator, Walton TV, posted a video sharing how this driver only wanted to get an oil change, but that’s not the only maintenance their car needs.
The Facebook post went viral, generating 1.5 million views as of this writing.
Commenters agreed with the mechanic about the absurdity of the car’s condition and even found some humor in the situation.
In the post, the mechanic says the driver only requested to have an oil change when serious issues were present under the car. The mechanic shows the problems that need to be addressed, and they’re not pretty.
To begin, the mechanic reveals how the car needs new tires, a transmission mount, a transmission, and a repair on a pipe with a hole.
“I don’t need new tires. I don’t need a new transmission mount. I don’t need a new transmission. We can just put some J-B Weld on those,” the mechanic says, mocking the customer’s opinion.
You don’t need to be an expert to see that the car was in poor condition and should not be on the road. Viewers, including some mechanics, found the car’s state baffling.
“Why would you bother with an oil change at this point?” one commenter asked.
“With some cars I’m like how did you get here?” another mechanic wonders.
“Same person swears that it is the most reliable car they have owned,” a third shared.
Some viewers found this situation hilarious and sarcastically played the role of the customer.
“Bro, just do the oil change . It’s really not that hard,” one commenter said.
“Do the oil change and put my car down now,” another commented.
“Always trying to upsell things you don’t even need,” a third shared.
Driving on worn-down tires can be dangerous and even expensive. Expect decreased fuel economy, a decline in handling, reduced traction, and generally bumpy or uncomfortable driving, AAA reports.
Seeing the following signs is an indication that new tires are needed. Look for the signs of shallow tread depth, uneven wear, bad vibrations, sidewall cracks, and tire bubbles or bulges.
Tires should be replaced once the tread depth reaches 4/32nds of an inch. Below this mark, stopping distances have already begun to deteriorate significantly.
To check tread depth, use the quarter trick. To do this trick, insert a quarter into the tire tread upside down, with Washington’s head going in first. If the top of George’s head is covered by the tread, your tires are okay. If the top of his head is visible at any point around the tire, you need new tires. It’s best to put the quarter in multiple points on each tire to ensure nothing is missed.
Tire rotations prevent uneven wear. To perform a tire rotation means periodically changing the position of each of the tires on your vehicle. Rotating your tires extends the tire’s life and avoids uneven wear patterns. Bridgestone Tire suggests following the manufacturer’s tire rotation schedule or rotating every 5,000 miles.
Rumbles under the driver’s seat mean there’s an imbalance between tires. Additionally, vibrations from the steering wheel can mean misalignment or a suspension issue.
This occurs when the tire rubber breaks down and leads to cracks on the sides of your tires. This typically occurs in harsh weather conditions and after high UV exposure.
This is caused by high-impact damage when driving. Usually, there isn’t a fix, and the tire needs to be replaced.
The transmission mount keeps the transmission safe and secure underneath the hood, Pep Boys reports.
According to Car Parts, the top symptoms of a bad transmission are abnormal noises, excessive vibration, and excessive transmission movement. If any of these are taking place in your car, it may be time to look into getting a new transmission mount.
Cost for replacement can range from $200-800, not including labor.
Transmission components are always mounted straight on the engine and the attached belt and gear system. This converts the combustion power produced by the engine into physical momentum. A transmission, also known as a gearbox, changes gears depending on speed and accelerator input so that the engine’s revolutions per minute are kept low. Transmissions prevent the engine from destroying itself by overworking.
Any maintenance involving the transmission will be costly. Kelley Blue Book reports a new transmission can cost anywhere between $2,900-$7,100 to replace.
Identifying the symptoms of a bad transmission will depend on whether it’s a manual or automatic car.
Manual cars will have difficulty shifting gears, a clutch that slips, a grinding noise, or a burning smell when the transmission is shot.
Automatic cars will buck and kick when trying to accelerate. The car may also have issues moving after putting the gearshift lever in Drive or another forward gear.
As mentioned, this replacement can be expensive, and many drivers consider just getting a new car, Chapel Hill Tire shares.
Ignoring regular car maintenance will only create further issues down the road. Thunderbird Automotive Specialists share that by ignoring basic car maintenance, drivers will experience higher repair costs, lower fuel efficiency, shortened vehicle life, reduced sale value, and safety risks.
