Tayler Colwell (@taylercolwell) went viral for revealing how she was quoted $9,000 to fix the A/C in a 2020 Porsche Cayenne. Her post generated over 40,300 views as of this writing.
Colwell says she recently took her 2020 Porsche Cayenne to the dealership to get her A/C fixed, only to find out her extended warranty had been denied. The dealership quoted Colwell $9,000 to fix the A/C. After having her extended warranty denied, Colwell sought guidance on what to do next from TikTok.
“Help a girl out. Should I take my car to another dealership or do I trade in my car?” Colwell asks.
Many commenters took turns throwing jabs at Colwell instead of offering answers to her question.
“You want a Porsche, you gotta pay Porsche prices,” one TikTok commenter shared.
“And that’s why we don’t buy cars we can’t afford to maintain,” another replied.
“Don’t buy a Porsche if you can’t afford to fix it,” a third added.
Colwell did clap back at commenters, claiming, “I can pay for a new one with my trade it or fix it, that’s the question. It’s one or the other buddy.”
“I literally just want my warranty that I paid for to work,” Colwell expresses in frustration.
Automakers and warranty companies are in business to make money, which means that they aren’t ecstatic to pay every claim that comes through, CarTalk reports.
A few common reasons for an extended warranty claim to be denied include:
The Broken Component Is Not Covered
You Abused the Vehicle or Skipped Service Visits
You’ve Modified Your Vehicle
The cost will depend on the complexity of the repair and whether a new compressor is needed. According to Kelley Blue Book, a simple A/C repair will cost between $384 and $445. Replacing an A/C compressor will be more pricey, ranging from $1,546 to $1,705. An A/C recharge will cost between $239 and $281.
So, the dealership’s quote to replace the A/C in the Porsche Cayenne certainly raises eyebrows. While Porsche is considered a luxury brand, this quote is quite high compared to the average cost.
Repair Pal reports the average cost for a Porsche Cayenne A/C compressor replacement is between $1,331 and $2,473. Labor costs are estimated between $373 and $548, while parts are priced between $958 and $1,925. This estimate is nowhere near $9,000.
“Don’t take to a Porsche dealership, take to an auto air conditioning place, depending on your area, if you have something like that. Can’t imagine an air conditioning system costing $9k,” one TikTok commenter shared.
“No ac is $9k unless it’s in a house,” another TikTok commenter added.
Before making any decision on trading in the car, one commenter suggested finding out why the extended warranty claim was denied.
“Find out why it got denied. Did you have a good service advisor that fought for you to get it approved? I’ve had to call the extended warranty company before & talk to them to get it approved,” one commenter shared.
It turns out that this was the solution that solved her problem.
“I just want to say thank you for this comment cause it was the actual one that solved my problem!” Colwell shares.
A claim denial is not the end of the road. Once you’ve received an official claim denial, you should ask for a copy of the decision in writing, CarTalk reports.
Then, call your warranty provider and ask about the steps you’ll need to take to appeal its decision. You’ll need to walk through your claims experience from start to finish and describe the shop’s opinion.
